STUDENT HANDBOOK

Kam Violin Studio

Welcome to my violin studio! Please read this handbook carefully.  Happy practicing!

PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS

Prospective students should contact me to schedule a preliminary lesson. This lesson is an opportunity to determine whether there is a good fit between the student, parent/guardian, and teacher. A preliminary lesson is not a guarantee of enrollment.

The cost of the preliminary lesson is:

  • $60 for 30 minutes (beginner)
  • $90 for 45 minutes (intermediate)
  • $120 for 60 minutes (intermediate to advanced)

I will let you know the recommended lesson length in our communications.

Experienced students should prepare one scale and an excerpt from their current piece. Regardless of the student’s age, a parent or guardian must attend the preliminary lesson.

EXPECTATIONS OF PARENTS:

You Are Learning Too!

Parents of young beginners are expected to attend lessons and practice daily with their child. Active parental involvement—including note-taking during lessons and consistent follow-through at home—is essential. Establishing and maintaining a daily practice routine is the parent’s responsibility.

Parents must not interfere with the learning process by distracting the student or interrupting the teacher during lessons. Please resist the temptation to instruct or correct your child during lesson time.

As students mature and become more independent, I will let parents know when less involvement is appropriate.

CONTACTING ANGIE

  • Email is the preferred method of communication for all studio-related matters, including scheduling.
  • Text only if you are running late or need to cancel unexpectedly.
  • Please do not text past 8:00 pm.

STUDENT PREPARATION & PRACTICE

Students are expected to come to each lesson prepared, having practiced assigned material from the previous lesson. Consistent lack of practice may result in discontinuation of lessons.

SUMMER LESSON POLICY

Year-round study is essential for consistent progress. Students who do not take summer lessons and do not attend approved music camps or festivals will forfeit their lesson slot for the fall term. Re-enrollment is not guaranteed.

FINGERNAILS

Violinists must maintain short fingernails. If your fingernails touch the strings while in proper playing position, they are too long.

ACCOMPANIST POLICY

Kam Violin Studio covers pianist fees for group classes and studio recitals. Students are responsible for accompanist fees for private lessons, rehearsals, solo recitals, and extracurricular performances.

INSTRUMENT RENTALS & MAINTENANCE

Kam Violin Studio does not provide instruments or perform repairs. Students are responsible for obtaining and maintaining an appropriate instrument for the duration of the term.

SHEET MUSIC

Students are expected to purchase their own sheet music. Upon enrollment, I will provide a projected repertoire and method book list. Please purchase materials promptly.

SCHEDULING LESSONS

Weekly lesson times are scheduled at the start of each term. Lessons take place Monday–Thursday afternoons and evenings. Weekend lessons are not offered.

New students may reserve a lesson time only after completing a preliminary lesson, submitting an Enrolled Student Information Form, and paying tuition.

CANCELLATION & RESCHEDULING

My teaching and performing schedule is full, and rescheduling lessons is difficult. By enrolling, families commit to a specific weekly lesson time for the entire term. Makeup lessons are not guaranteed. Cancellations do not exempt families from tuition payment.

  • Families may arrange swaps with other students using the Parent & Student Portal.
  • Students unable to attend in person due to mild illness or transportation issues may take a virtual lesson during their scheduled time.
  • Students unable to attend either in person or virtually may submit recordings via the MarcoPolo app. I will use the lesson time to provide feedback and assign new material.
    Download: https://www.marcopolo.me/

If I must cancel a lesson, it will be rescheduled at a mutually convenient time or credited toward the next term. Missed makeup lessons will not be rescheduled.

I do not initiate makeup scheduling. Families are responsible for swaps or checking the online calendar for openings. In cases of illness, families must initiate virtual or video lessons.

TARDINESS

I will wait 15 minutes before assuming a student will not attend. Lost time due to lateness cannot be made up.

If I am late, the missed time will be made up.

ILLNESS

Please do not attend lessons when sick. Virtual or asynchronous video lessons are available alternatives.

WITHDRAWALS & REFUNDS

Withdrawals must be submitted in writing. Students who discontinue lessons without written notice will not receive a refund.

Students who withdraw during the term will receive a prorated refund minus 25%.

DISMISSAL

I reserve the right to dismiss any student due to lack of progress, lack of interest, disrespectful behavior, frequent absences or tardiness, payment delinquency, or failure to follow studio policies. Dismissed students will not receive a refund.
